ALAMEDA, Calif. -- An event aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf today signaled the transition to new leadership as part of a time-honored tradition. Capt. Thomas E. Crabbs took command of the Legend-class cutter and its crew from Capt. John F. Prince during a change of command ceremony at Coast Guard Guard Island in Alameda.

Prince completes more than 26 years of sea-going duty having commanded six cutters, including the Bertholf. For Crabbs, the Bertholf will be his seventh afloat assignment, previously commanding the cutter Boutwell, also homeported in Alameda.

The Change of Command Ceremony is a time-honored tradition which formally restates, to the officers and crew of the command, the continuity of the authority vested in the Commanding Officer. It's a unique military ritual representing a total transfer of responsibility, authority, and accountability from one leader to the next.
