First there was the $787 Billion stimulus package. Then there was the highly controversial cap and trade bill. Now we have a bill that would completely overhaul the American healthcare system.
What do all of the above have in common? Answer: Urgency on the part of Barack Obama. In the first two instances, the bills were so long that no senator or congressman had enough time to read their contents before they were passed (Cap Trade has passed the House only).
Now the president is demanding the same level of urgency for his new healthcare plan. We‚re seeing a recurring theme from the Obama White House that also applies to a bill that would completely overhaul the American healthcare system. Insistent that the bill pass before the August recess, Max Baucus (D), chair of the Senate Finance Committee is likely sweating in the face of some significant white house heat.
The Hill is reporting (see article below) that Obama was not happy to learn on Thursday that passage would have to wait until at least next week. Should the August recess arrive without passage, one can only guess as to his temperment at that point.
Many believe that the reason Obama is so interested in getting the bill passed now is because it won‚t get passed once it is read and the public starts to understand its implications. An argument along those lines can certainly be made for the $787 Billion stimulus package which has had no effect except to grow the country‚s deficit and debt.
Others say that constituent anger over this bill will be very obvious when Senators and congressmen return to their districts in August. There is a strong argument that if the bill doesn‚t pass before the recess, it won‚t pass afterward because constituents will have made their very strong opposition very apparent∑..in person.
