Oakland, CA – The City of Oakland’s recent decision to raise parking meter fees and increase some fines was made in response to the most serious financial crisis ever faced by the City, and it accompanied significant cuts to vital public services, including police, libraries, parks and maintenance.

To help address an $83 million budget shortfall, the City increased hourly parking meter rates and certain parking fines and extended parking meter hours of operation Citywide. The new rates and hours took effect on July 1. In summary:

Oakland’s parking meter rates have increased from $1.50 per hour to $2.00 per hour Citywide.

Parking meter hours of operation have been extended by two hours in the evening, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm; all City meters now operate from 8:00 am. until 8:00 pm.

Many parking fines have been increased. For example:

Double parking: $75 (was $30)

Parking on a sidewalk: $100 (was $30)

Parking wrong way on a two-way street: $60 (was $40)

Parking illegally in a disabled parking space: $335 (new fine)

Parking commercial vehicles in a residential district: $270 (was $122)

The fine for the most common violation, parking at an expired meter, was not increased.

The City also began applying a $10 surcharge levied by the State of California to all of its parking citations. This surcharge is included in all of City’s parking citation amounts and is passed through to the State.

The City of Oakland reminds residents and visitors that parking on the sidewalk, blocking a sidewalk or ramp or parking a vehicle facing on-coming traffic are citable violations and will be enforced.
