El Bohemio News has been in existence since 1971 to provide news and information of interest and importance to our community and to provide our community with a voice.

Circulation

El Bohemio News currently prints 20,000 papers weekly and distributes them to an extensive newsrack fleet and to carefully selected retail locations.

Circulation is focused on the City of San Francisco. This focus has made El Bohemio News the dominant Spanish language publication in San Francisco.

Distribution south of San Francisco extends through the major Hispanic population centers on the San Francisco Peninsula and into the South Bay Area.

Our mission to provide information to our community and to serve as our community's voice has not always been easy. Like any other market, the San Francisco Bay Area is crowded with competitors. Some of these competitors have not always been ethical. Some have inflated their circulation claims damaging themselves as well as legitimate newspapers in the eyes of advertisers. El Bohemio News is, and will remain, committed to honest, effective distribution of our product because, in the long run, it serves both our community and our advertisers best.

Throughout 2005, El Bohemio News suffered loss of advertising revenue as some of our unethical competitors inflated their circulation claims into the stratosphere. Loss of advertising revenue forced us gradually to decrease our circulation. Now on the rebound after a rather ugly circulation fight, we are presently printing and distributing some 20,000 copies weekly.

While this has been a difficult period, the prospects are brighter for 2007.

Responding to complaints by El Bohemio News, one auditing company conducted an intensive investigation of their newspaper members in this market with the result that most of the inflated circulation claims were identified and subsequently curtailed. It is our hope that other auditing companies will likewise enforce reasonable circulation standards on their members in this area. When that happens, the playing field will truly be level for everyone.

We compete fairly and we are committed to ensuring that every newspaper in our market competes with us fairly and honestly.

Our circulation is carefully monitored, spot checked in the field by location, and continuously evaluated. Our intent is to serve our community better and to insure that our advertisers get their full money's worth for the advertising dollars they spend with us.

Please remember that when you, as an advertiser, place ads with a newspaper, you are in effect voting for that newspaper's survival and, given the limited number of ads available, voting against the survival of other newspapers in the same market. It strikes us that such a responsibility calls for careful consideration on the part of the advertiser and their agency. After all, the newspaper with the highest circulation claim IS NOT always the wisest choice because many such claims are not supported by the reality on the street.
